Evidence and provenance

Asking aizk a question gives back evidence, not an answer. This page explains the shape of that evidence and how to read it. It assumes you know what Scopes are and what separates a source from derived knowledge.

You ask one plain question. There is no scope to pick and no page to turn. aizk searches everything you can currently see, which is your private memory plus every team scope you stand in plus every intersection you qualify for, and hands back a single Markdown string.

The items are ranked by merit, best first, and that ordering is the only structure. Nothing is grouped by kind or by scope, because the most useful thing should come first no matter where it came from. If nothing relevant is visible, you get an empty string rather than a padded one.

Each item wears exactly one label. These three are the whole public vocabulary, and the engine’s internal machinery never leaks into them.

Source excerpt is stored source text, a piece of something a person actually wrote or uploaded. This is the strongest evidence aizk has, and it wins any disagreement.

Derived memory is a rebuildable projection grounded in sources. Facts, profiles and summaries all arrive under this one label. Useful for orientation and for connecting things, but always second to the source it came from.

Recent session memory is short-lived working context from recent activity that has not been folded into the long-term graph yet. It is the freshest and least settled material. Treat it like a note somebody scribbled an hour ago.

One deliberate omission is worth naming. aizk runs several retrieval strategies at once, and none of their names appear in the output. What matters to a reader is what kind of thing an item is, not which internal path found it.

An item does not say “shared”. It names the exact set of organizations it lives in, joined by when there is more than one. Book Club ∩ Study Group means the item lives in the overlap of both, and you can see it because you stand in both. Private items say private and stop there.

When any returned item lives in a shared scope, the answer opens with a ## Scopes block listing each of those organizations once, in name order, with its description, so a reader who has never heard of one can tell what it is without leaving the response. Private evidence never creates an entry there, because there is nothing to explain about your own memory.

Two habits follow. If an item names an organization, treat what it says as that team’s knowledge rather than general truth. And if you are about to repeat something outward, the scope line tells you where it came from and therefore where it may safely go.

When an item is grounded in a preserved original, it carries a Resource line naming the exact document revision behind it. That is a handle for reading the original bytes on demand, one specific revision of one specific artifact rather than a general file search.

The intended use is narrow. Read it when the task genuinely needs the original, a figure, a signature, an exact page. Do not open every resource a response mentions, because the text excerpt is usually the whole point and the file is usually much larger.

aizk deliberately stops one step short of answering.

An answer hides its reasoning. It arrives as a paragraph you either trust or you do not, with no way to check which part came from your team and which part a model smoothed over. Evidence can be checked. Every item names its layer and its scope, so your assistant can weigh them, notice when two disagree, and say so out loud rather than picking one silently.

That division of labor keeps aizk honest about what it is. It stores and retrieves, and the assistant reading the evidence does the thinking and stays responsible for the answer.

Every response repeats that sentence as a quote block, for a real reason.

Responses are capped in size, because a memory that floods a context window is worse than none. The default is 2,048 tokens, and a caller may ask for less or more up to a ceiling of 16,384.

The packing rule is simple and worth knowing. Items are ranked by merit, then the answer is the longest prefix of that ranking that fits the budget. It is not a best-fit selection, and a small item never jumps a large one above it. So the budget cuts the tail, which means lowering it drops the weakest evidence first and leaves the strongest untouched.

Most callers should leave it alone, and lower it only when responses run longer than a particular assistant can comfortably hold.
